TThe site where Mines Wellness City (MWC) now sits was formerly the Sungei Besi Mine, once upon a time the largest and deepest open cast alluvial tin mine in the world. The deserted mining pit, as deep as 100 metres in some parts and with dangerously unstable slopes, was considered unviable for any form of construction. It took a bold developer, Country Heights helmed by Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Kim Yew, to take over the entire landscape in 1990 and flooded the mining pit turning it into a huge lake. Restoring large masses of land and building around the lake, the property was then named Mines Wellness City.
